Praise the Lord

Praise the Lord for small mercies

Today the sermon took inspiration from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians

Even though Paul was under house arrest he gave blessings for small mercies and encouraged others to do the same.

Brian also took reference to the hymn “How good is the God we adore” to the tune Celeste, written by Joseph Hart for the “Lancashire Sunday School Songs” in 1857.

How good is the God we adore! Our faithful, unchangeable friend: His love is as great as his power and knows neither measure nor end.

For Christ is the first and the last; his Spirit will guide us safe home; We’ll praise him for all that is past; And trust him for all that’s to come.

Brian thought back that perhaps in 1864 when the church was in its foundation as a baby church, perhaps the children were singing the hymn “How good is the God we adore” and how we look forward to celebrate 150 years of Christian witness at Christ Church and to think of 150 ways God loves you.

The last lines in particular says that we should;

  • praise him for all that is past, and the church praises God for the good year we had with many things happening, and also

  • trust him for all that’s to come.

Paul tells us that we have been chosen by God to be his adopted children and Jesus gives us this chance to make an opportunity to be blameless before God.

  • Do you look forward to this year ahead?

  • Do you think it has potential to be a good year?

  • Do you Praise the Lord for small mercies?
